How to Download Reels on Mac

On a Mac you don't need any app or extension. Any browser is enough. Here's how to download a public Instagram Reel as an MP4 that opens straight in QuickTime.

Steps on Mac

  1. Open the Reel on instagram.com. Click the ⋯ menu (or the share icon) and choose Copy link.
  2. Go to savereelsapp.com, paste the link (⌘V) and click Download Reel.
  3. Click ⬇ Download MP4. The file lands in your Downloads folder — double-click to play in QuickTime.

Why it plays in QuickTime (and not just Chrome)

Instagram streams most Reels as separate video and audio tracks. Many of those video tracks use the VP9 codec, which plays in Chrome but is not supported by QuickTime. SaveReelsApp picks the H.264 (AVC) version with AAC audio, converts VP9 when needed, and writes the file with its index at the start ("fast start"). The result plays in QuickTime, Photos, iMovie, VLC and most editors.

FAQ

Do I need to install software to download Reels on my Mac?

No. Open savereelsapp.com in any browser, paste the Reel link and the MP4 downloads to your Downloads folder.

Why do some Reel downloads play only sound in QuickTime?

Those files use the VP9 codec, which QuickTime does not support. SaveReelsApp outputs H.264 video with AAC audio so the MP4 plays in QuickTime.

What format are the downloads?

MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio, which work in QuickTime, Photos, iMovie, VLC and most editors.
