How to Download Instagram Reels on Mac or PC
On a computer you don't need any software. A browser is enough. Here's how to download a public Instagram Reel on macOS or Windows as an MP4 that plays in QuickTime, Windows Media Player, VLC and video editors.
Steps on Mac or Windows
- Open the Reel on instagram.com. Click the ⋯ menu (or the share icon) and choose Copy link. You can also copy the URL from the address bar.
- Go to savereelsapp.com, paste the link (Ctrl+V or ⌘V) and click Download Reel.
- Click ⬇ Download MP4. The file goes to your Downloads folder.
On a phone you copied a link on? Send it to yourself, or just use the iPhone guide and save it straight to the phone.
Why some Reel downloads have sound but no picture in QuickTime
Instagram streams most Reels as separate video and audio tracks. Many of those video tracks use the VP9 codec, which plays fine in Chrome but is not supported by QuickTime Player or by many older Windows players. If a downloader just merges those tracks into an MP4, you get a file that shows a black screen with audio only on a Mac.
SaveReelsApp avoids that problem. It picks the H.264 (AVC) video version with AAC audio, and if a Reel only exists in VP9 it converts it to H.264. The MP4 is also written with its index at the start ("fast start"), so it opens and seeks right away. The result plays in QuickTime, Photos, iMovie, Windows Media Player, Premiere and CapCut.
Already have a file that won't play?
- Open it in VLC, which plays VP9 fine.
- Or download it again with SaveReelsApp to get an H.264 copy.
- To check the codec on a Mac, open the file in QuickTime and choose Window → Show Movie Inspector. "H.264" or "AVC" means it's compatible.
Tips
- Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox all work.
- If clicking opens a player tab instead of downloading, right-click the video and choose Save video as….
FAQ
Why does my downloaded Reel play only audio in QuickTime?
The file probably uses the VP9 video codec, which QuickTime does not support. SaveReelsApp outputs H.264 video with AAC audio, so its MP4 files play in QuickTime.
Do I need to install software to download Reels on PC?
No. Paste the Reel link into savereelsapp.com in any modern browser and the MP4 downloads to your Downloads folder.
What format are the downloads?
MP4 files with H.264 video and AAC audio, which work in nearly every player and editor.
